Rev. Robert O. Edwards Sr., age 89, of Springfield, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014. He was born January 28, 1925 in Tamms, Illinois, the son of Virgil and Aleatha (Dillow) Edwards. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On December 24, 1946 he and Shirley Bernice Childers were united in marriage.
Rev. Edwards was a United Methodist Minister, serving in Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri until his retirement. He and his wife, Shirley were most recently members of Wesley United Methodist Church in Springfield. He also enjoyed his first vocation as a carpenter, and that continued to be his favorite hobby throughout his life. His handiwork and skill can be seen in the homes of all of his family.
Survivors include: His wife of 67 years, Shirley; two children and their spouses, Pam and Johnny Fite of Ozark, and Robert O. Edwards Jr. and wife Irene of St. Louis; five grandchildren, Amy Fite and husband Rob Rigdon of Highlandville, Bethany Fite and husband Michael Olwig of Battlefield, Lydia Edwards, Nina Edwards and Maria Edwards, all of St. Louis; two great-grandchildren, Seamus Hamilton and Jonathan Rigdon, both of Highlandville; a brother, Harrison Edwards; three sisters, Louise Seay, Virgie Edwards, and Judi Wilson; and a very special niece, Carla Learn.
A graveside funeral with military honors will be 2:00 PM Friday, April 11, at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Ozark.
