Opal Aline Helems, age 80, of Springfield, passed away Monday, February 5, 2018. She was born March 12, 1937 in Seymour, the daughter of Tomas and Lattie (Becker) Matney. Opal graduated from Willard High School.
She was a beautician in Raymore, MO for 25 years. She then was employed as a receptionist in Kansas City at Phelps Tool and Die. She loved craft making and attending craft shows. Grandchildren visiting her home enjoyed the craft materials she used to make her projects.
Survivors include: Two children, Steve Smith and Becky of Kansas City, and Terry Lynn McMurtrey and Mike of Ozark; five grandsons, Stephen Lee Smith, Joe McMurtrey and Candice, Talor Smith, Jared Cable, and Jacob Smith; a granddaughter, Jackie Nelson and Mike; two great-grandchildren, Juliana McMurtrey, and Eleanor Nelson; sisters, Clara Long and Charles of Flippin AR, Edith Porter of Republic, Birdie Cummins of Springfield, and Ida Deckard and Gene of Willard; a brother Ival Matney of Clever; and good friends, Bob and Cheri Wheeler of Springfield.
Opal was preceded in death by two sisters, Lillie Matney and Geneva Johnson, a brother, Cleveland Matney and her parents.
A graveside funeral will be 1:00 PM Friday, February 9, in Wesley Cemetery, Willard. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Ozark.
