Opal Cameron, age 90, of Nixa, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014. She was born December 3, 1923, in Ava, to John and Nelly (Wheeler) Thompson. Opal worked hard all of her life. She hauled hay, and was a migrant farm worker. At times, she would work three jobs to provide for her family. Opal worked for St. Johns Hospital, as a nurse's aide, for 28, years. After she got off work at the hospital, she would work on the farm. Opal was very protective of her children. It was said she would fight a buzz saw to protect her kids. She had an ornery streak and had a good sense of humor. Opal loved her grandchildren and doted on them. She loved taking trips with her son, Kyle. They would go where ever the car was pointed, the Grand Canyon, Royal Gorge, Oshkosh, and Washington State. Kyle would take Opal flying in his airplane, and allowed her to steer. Where ever she looked the plane would go, abruptly. Opal lived a full life, with many joys and memories.
Opal is survived by her children, a daughter Pat Maggard and husband Kenneth, of Sparta; son Kyle Maggard, of Ft. Wayne, IN; Grand Children Teresa West, husband Tommy, of Nixa, Kevin Comley, and wife Sue, of Branson, Jamie Parnin and fianc� Ryne Crockett, of Wilmington NC, and Andrea Maggard of Springfield.
Opal is preceded in death by her parents; former husband Clint Maggard; 9 brothers and sisters; and a son J.D. Maggard.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 15, 2014, in Adams Funeral Home, Nixa. A visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 14, 2014, in the funeral home. Burial will follow the funeral at Holland Cemetery, Rogersville.
