On Wednesday night, November 26, 2014, Lance Dale Porterfield, age 19, went to meet his Lord in the roping pen in the sky. He, along with three of his friends, were taken in a pickup truck wreck south of Highlandville.
Lance was born August 15, 1995 in Springfield, the son of Chip and Phyllis (Fulton) Porterfield.
Survivors include: his mother, Phyllis Porterfield, Sparta; father, Chip Porterfield, Republic; sister, LaRae Porterfield, Sparta and fianc� Thomas Smith, Barnsdall, Oklahoma; grandparents, Ronald and Ellen Fulton, and Dolan and Lanora Porterfield; uncle, Roger Fulton; aunt, Michele Vinson; and cousins, Stefan Pearcey and Dalton Vinson.
Lance loved life. From the moment he was born, he brought joy to his family's lives and to all of those he met. He loved playing baseball, basketball and Mighty Mites. Lance began team roping, consuming his every thought. He loved to rope. He competed at many junior rodeos and ropings throughout the United States. This past summer he enjoyed competing at the IFYR in Shawnee, Oklahoma and the NHSRA Finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Lance's family thanks the Gulick and Crawford families for hauling him and becoming his 2nd families. This past October he competed at the USTRC Finals in Oklahoma City, and roped with one of his heroes, Cory Petska. Thank you Cory.
Lance started his college career at NEO A&M in Miami, Oklahoma this past fall on a rodeo scholarship with intentions of becoming an accountant. He absolutely lived for college and there were times his family couldn't get him to come home. He was starting to enjoy success at the college rodeos and is currently sitting 6th in the heading in the Central Plains region.

Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Sunday, November 30, at the Sparta High School. Burial will be at Sparta Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 PM until service time on Sunday at the school. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Ozark
