Mrs. Jane C. McCormick, 92, died at the Manor at Elfindale on Dec. 11 2010, following a long illness. Jane Elizabeth Coffey was born Jan. 29, 1918, in Charlevoix, Mich., to George and Marian McCall Coffey. From an early age, following the death of her parents, Jane grew up in the home of her devoted Grandmother Nora Coffey, in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit. It was here that she developed her extraordinary compassion and concern for the needs of others. Her beloved uncles introduced her to the rough and tumble world of Detroit Democratic Party politics. She always credited them with her lifelong enthusiasm for the Democratic Party. As a young woman, she was employed with the Federal Theatre Project of the Works Progress Administration and she also served as the president of the Ladies Sodality of the Most Holy Trinity. She was joined in marriage to Vincent P. McCormick on Sept. 3, 1940, in a loving partnership that lasted for nearly 50 years. During World War II Jane was employed with the U.S. Public Health service while her husband Vincent attended medical school in Kansas City. Shortly after the war Dr. McCormick and Jane moved to Ozark where he established his medical practice. Jane worked along side him in his office for decades and until his death in 1990. They touched the lives of countless people. They travelled the globe together but always strove to make their corner of that world a better place for all. Jane will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and compassion for friends and strangers alike, for her good humor, and for the loving care she gave her family. Jane was active in many community activities including, Blue Birds, American Cancer Society, Christian County Child Welfare Board, the Christian County Child Abuse Council, Hospice, and the Ozark Study Club. She was a founding parishioner of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Parish in Ozark. Jane was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Vincent P. McCormick, her parents and her grandmother. She is survived by her son Dr. Vincent D. McCormick and his wife Saundra of San Francisco, her daughter Judith A. Scalley and her husband Jack of Atlanta, her daughter Virginia E. McCormick of Springfield, her son Timothy P. McCormick and his wife Barbara of Kansas City, and her daughter Sheila P. McCormick of Amherst, Mass.; as well as seven grandchildren, Kelley, Kevin and Brian McCormick, Andrew McCormick and Eli, Keelin and Grace Berman; as well as six great-grandchildren. A private service was held at the Manor at Elfindale with Jane and her immediate family. Her life ended as it was lived, surrounded by those who loved and admired her. She would want her friends to know that she died a very peaceful death. A memorial service will be Saturday, January 29 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church Ozark, MO. Following the memorial service, Mrs. McCormick"s cremated remains will be interred with Dr. McCormick at Weaver Cemetery in Ozark. The entire McCormick family wishes to express their affection and gratitude to Jane"s great friend and long time care giver Nan Pitts. The family would also like to thank the staff of The Manor at Elfindale for the care and kindness they provided to their mother. A fund honoring Jane"s life will be announced.
