James was born in Bee Branch, Arkansas on October 9, 1939, to Arthur and Ivar (Leslie) Johnston. After graduating from Vilonia High School, he attended the University of Arkansas where he earned a Specialist in Education. While attending college, he met the love of his life, Johnnie Sue Sims and they were married on August 3,1962. He served the public schools and community of Green Forest Arkansas for thirty-nine years, as a high school math teacher, High School Principal and finally as Superintendent.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years Johnnie (Sims) Johnston, daughter Jan Johnston-Taylor and husband Charles of Springfield, MO; and son Jeff Johnston and wife Laurabeth (Watkins) Johnston of Fordland, MO. His four grandchildren: Megan (Taylor) Bailey and husband Brett of Springfield; Kelsey (Johnston) Mork and husband Mat of Bury Saint Edmunds, UK; Kolby (Johnston) Keller and husband Johnny of Newport News, VA; Sam Johnston and wife Allison (Avery) of St. Mary’s GA and three great grandchildren: Blake Mork, Nolan Bailey and James Mork were a special joy to him.
He was loved by a host of family and friends and returned that love to them - as well as to his Razorbacks, chocolate milkshakes, Elvis, good books, and a hearty laugh.
Special appreciation goes to the amazing staff at Mercy in Springfield, Mo, especially Dr. Shah, the McKenzies on both the day night shifts, Chaplain Chelsea and the entire COVID ward. Their professionalism and compassion are inspirational.
