Gerald Leonard Johnson, age 86, of Nixa, passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2011. He was born May 15, 1925 in Tucson, Arizona, the son of Roy and Grace (Smith) Johnson. At the age of 17 in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country for 12 years as a radio operator. Following his enlistment, Mr. Johnson was employed by Collins Radio for 19 years and Datum Corporation for 14 years. He was a licensed Amateur Radio operator for 62 years. He and Helen Truelsen were united in marriage on January 18, 1964. After retirement, they moved from Tustin, California to Missouri in 1986. Survivors include his wife, Helen, a sister, Jeanne Kersey and husband John, Dana Point, California, nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral with military honors will be 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 5, in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Nixa. Memorial donations may be made to ARRL Radio, or the American Diabetes Association, in care of the family or the funeral home.
