Dr. Gene William Farthing passed away on December 9, 2012, in Mercy Villa in Springfield. He was born in Sparta, Missouri, on March 4, 1914, the third son of Dr. Robert R. Farthing and Ollie Belle Kerr Farthing. The family later moved to Ozark, Missouri, where he grew up and attended Ozark schools. He later attended State Teachers College (now MSU) in Springfield and the University of Missouri at Columbia. He studied two years at the Missouri University School of Medicine and completed his MD degree at Rush Medical School of the University of Chicago. Additional training was in Chicago and later at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He began his practice in Springfield in 1941 and continued to enjoy it until he retired at age 72. In March of 1942 he married the former Nancy Luster of Springfield and they began a long and loving marriage that lasted for 70 years. He was a member of Central Christian Church. Gene was predeceased by his parents and his two older brothers, Dr. Fred R. Farthing of Springfield and Jack A. Farthing of Ozark. He is survived by his wife Nancy and their children, G. William Farthing, (Bill) and his wife Carol of Bangor, Maine, Ruth Krill and husband Robert of Springfield, and Susan Bear and husband Stephen of Chesterfield, Missouri, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Arrangements are under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ozark. Private graveside services will be held. Memorials may be made to Central Christian Church, Springfield
