Alyce Hughes

May 30, 1922 — February 17, 2025

Ozark

Alyce Maxine Hughes, a remarkable lady of 102 3/4 years, peacefully passed away to be with her Lord and Savior on February 17, 2025.

Born on May 30, 1922, in Lead Hill, Missouri, she was the cherished daughter of Bessie M. Applegate Hays and was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Joe Marion and Mary Applegate.

Her journey through life included a beautiful union with Norman T. Hughes, whom she married on May 11, 1940. Together, they cherished 71 years of marriage, nurturing their family through the vibrant years in Oldfield before relocating to Ozark in May 1969.

Alyce was the loving mother of E. Eyvon Sanders, Regina (Jeanie) Anderson, and Patricia (Patty) Hughes, who survive her.

Alyce is also survived by her grandchildren, Teresa McCutchen (Charlie), Jeff Sanders (Sophia), Kimberly Sanders, Larry D. Anderson, Jr (Tassi) and Lesa Duran (Charles); 13 great-grands; and five great-great-grands with two more coming very soon.

Alyce's heart bore the weight of loss when her beloved son Tommy made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the Vietnam War on June 16, 1969. This moment marked one of the most profound hardships she faced in her life, a testament to her resilience and strength.

In 1999, Alyce and Norman found their home in Nixa, where they spent their later years together. Norman preceded her in death, alongside her mother, Bessie; her son, Thomas E. Hughes; and son in law, Marion Sanders.

Throughout her life, Alyce's passions flourished in many ways. She was an accomplished seamstress, sewing clothing, embroidery, and quilting. Gardening brought her joy, as she nurtured both vegetables and flowers, while books added to her joyful pursuit of knowledge. Most significantly, her love for family was at the core of her existence.

Musically gifted, Alyce’s early years were highlighted by her harmonious contributions to church gatherings and singing alto the Shady Grove Quartet. Her rich voice harmonized in worship and gatherings alike, a reflection of her faith and community spirit.

Professionally, Alyce dedicated herself to garment factories such as Hagale Industries in Ozark and Calverts in Springfield, before retiring from Fasco Industries in 1987.

In retirement, her devotion to her church flourished as she taught Sunday School to first graders, taught in Vacation Bible School, and assisted in the church library. During the construction of the current First Baptist Church of Ozark building, she and Eyvon joyously baked pies and crescent rolls at 90 a batch for the builders displaying her generous spirit and culinary talents.

Even after retirement, Alyce remained active in church service, tirelessly managing laundry and mending for the First Baptist Church Ozark Clothing Ministry and working on shoebox projects for Operation Christmas Child. Her great fondness for family history made her a beloved resource for stories and memories, drawing people to her for her vast knowledge and captivating tales.

Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Quail Creek and Good Shepherd Hospice for their compassionate care during her final days.

A funeral service to honor Alyce’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Ozark, under the direction of Adams Funeral Home. Chris Thixton and Dr. Phillip Burden will officiate, with burial to follow at Old Boston Cemetery in Oldfield, Missouri. Friends and family are welcomed to gather for visitation from 1 p.m. until the service time at the church.

In memory of Alyce, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Ozark Clothing Ministry, reflecting her lifelong passion for serving others.

Alyce Maxine Hughes will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great grandmother and friend, whose legacy of love and church involvement will live on in the hearts of many.
